It’s been a rough couple of days for Izzy. The pain got ahead of her Tuesday night so that was rough. We had an appt with her dr on Wednesday and she got her bandages changed. I wasn’t prepared for the size of the incision but I was surprised by how normal her new tripawd body seems to me. Maybe it’s just that I love her so much. While the bandages were being changed the dr gave her an injection of pain killer which helped her a lot although it did knock her out for the rest of the day and night. Everything looked normal with her, no fever, no seroma, but no poo the either. She has until tomorrow to poo on her own or the dr will send something home to help her. We are also on day 2 of her not wanting to eat which is making it difficult to give meds. But she is resting comfortably and healing.
I am sorry you and Izzy are going through a rough time. It is not unusual for them to have a decreased appetite during this period. At this point, whatever you have to do to get her to eat is fine. If it is rotisserie chicken, hamburgers, scrambled eggs with cheese, whatever it takes.
Remember, no food in.. a lot less poo out. If she is not eating she won’t be eliminating as much. Many of us went 5-7 days with no poo. If she likes the pumpkin that will definitely help her to go when she is ready, so keep incorporating it in whatever food she will eat if you can.
Large puppies can take a little more time to recover and learn their new balance. If she continues to seem uncomfortable, please talk to her doc about tweaking her meds whether it be a different dose or dosing at different intervals. The key is to try and keep her comfortable at a nice steady pace.
Hang in there, you are doing great!!
Hugs,
Jackie and Huck
Thanks Jackie and Huck,
She had a lot better day today, my son brought her chicken nuggets, her fav and she choked like a champ, almost no meds today just the last of her antibiotics and one pain pill this morning. I did force feed her some water, chicken broth and yogurt this morning because she hadn’t eaten or drank anything yesterday but she seemed pretty comfortable all day. She’s sleeping tonight without the injection so that’s a good thing. I’m thinking we might have overmedicated in our efforts to keep her comfortable and she didn’t like the head trip that comes with the pain meds. We’re going to keep a close watch on her and give meds when she needs them rather than on a schedule. Judging from today she might be ready for that, we’ll see 😐
