Waiting for the poo………..

Izzy’s surgery was five days ago, and were waiting for a poo. She is very tired today and we all overslept so we are late on her pain meds schedule and she woke up crying. She was awake until 3 am and the pain meds seem to make her pant heavier than usual, which make me worry so there is no sleep happening for me until she reaches her pant plateau. Now she has decided to lay in the dirt outside and she isn’t moving anywhere. Have I mentioned that Izzy is stubborn, even by St. Bernard standards. so she is laying in the dirt, outside, and still no poo. She had pumpkin with her dinner yesterday so I’m hoping. And it’s warm outside so I’m going to let her be where she wants for now ( it’s not like I can do anything about it right) and hope she decides to come in before she gets too knocked out by her meds. The only problem is that if I don’t watch her I’m not going to know if she poops and she won’t usually poo with an audience. So I’m playing lookie loo out the windows hoping for some puppy poo ( and that’s something I never thought I would be saying) and for her to come inside on her own and I’m hoping for a nap too!

It took Fallon about 5 days to poop also, and I can’t tell you the joy we felt once she did! We were told it could take days and not to worry…easier said than done.

My Cookie did not poo for 5 days after surgery, but her appetite was not great and I had to force meds many times. I also noticed the heavy panting after pain meds and it worried me very much.

I tried pumkin but she wouldn’t eat it, and I finally got the on line fix, Olive oil mixed in chicken broth and that worked within two hours!

I hardly slept the entire first week The second week will be better!!

It sounds like she is doing pretty well! If she likes pumpkin, just incorporate a bit with each of her meals for a few days. Don’t forget, after fasting for surgery and then probably not eating quite as much as normal for her, it may take several days for her to finally have a poo. I think Huck was 5-6 days also. On top of the smaller food amounts, sometimes the meds can bind them a little too. I would not worry too much right now. I hope you get your nap soon, you need rest also!
Maybe you can get her to follow you for a nice treat of something that she likes?
You are doing a great job 🙂
    Hugs,
    Jackie and Huck
